The author’s favorite excerpt(s) from the book:
Our ideas about relationships are based on fairy tales, though the truth is a lot more complicated. You thought you had met Mr. Right—I know I did—but then he started to abuse you emotionally and maybe physically too. Why, Prince Charming wouldn’t do that! You felt like he was your true soulmate, but now you have made the choice to leave him. Does that mean you’ll never have another crack at it? The truth is that there are a lot of Mr. Rights out there. There is no one true soulmate; there are instead many possible true loves. True love is a combination of respect, kindness, support, attraction, and, well, love. If those elements are not all present, you won’t feel loved, and what’s more, you won’t be loved. The sad truth is that many people have been so badly abused as children that they don’t know how to love. Although that is a tragedy, you can’t help them by giving them real love. They have to choose to heal those wounds themselves to even be able to receive your love. And, what they are capable of giving you will only be an expression of their desire to exercise control over something in their lives. That’s not love. If you’ve been in a relationship with just such a person, your love, no matter how true, will be unable to heal them. Nothing external can heal them at that point. Their healing has to come from within. That’s the first fairy tale to lay to rest. You won’t be able to kiss the sleeping prince and bring him back to life; only he can wake himself up if he chooses to do so.
